To search for seamen in registers
If you are looking for seamen in the archives, there are some things to remember:
1) You must know the name and year of birth for the person.
2) To limit the search you ought to know the year when the person was at sea.
3) Look in the list below to find out what shipping office is situated nearest to the residence of the person you are looking for. The shipping office located nearest to the place of residence was most often the shipping office where the seaman was registered.
4) After this, contact the County Archive which has rolls for the person and ask for copies of the documents from them.
In the Seamen's Shipping Office Museum we have rolls from Uddevalla, Lysekil and Marstrand on microfiche. We regret that we don't have resources to do research work, but the public is welcome to visit the museum and do their own research in our archives.
5) If the sought seaman was at sea in 1939, or thereafter, it will make the search easier, since the Shipping Authority at
that time started to use register cards for every active seaman with notes of ship, time at sea and position on board.
Those register cards are kept at the County Archive in Gothenburg, where you can get a copy of the card. Name and time of birth are needed in this case, too, but then you get the total time at sea in one search.
